I am going to do a DIY split as a summer project and have picked up a few used boards for $40 each on kijiji and need some advice on which would be best to split!

1) 2005 Lib Tech TRS 167 - no set back
2)200? Option Freeplus 163 -set back

Both are in surprisingly good shape. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I have never been splitboarding before and plan to join up with a few buddies this coming winter and avoid the resorts/expensive cat-ski operations in my search for fresh lines!

Both. Never ride a chairlift again. Solid boards and helicopters... pffff... earn them turns!

and at $40 get the option as a backup or experimental swallow tail

set back is irrelevant on a DIY split, put the pucks wherever you want

lib for-sure. And just run the trice strait through the saw with no edges at the ends. Split both and use the first one to get an idea of how to do it.

I will for sure get started on the Option as a first run to work out the kinks and mess around with a swallowtail!

In regards to the set back on the lib, I understand the pucks can go wherever but has anyone had issues in putting the pucks back and thus altering the performance/handling of the board by being WAY off center on the camber?

Dude it's a snowboard that you are sawing in half, and drilling holes through. The performance of the board as far as stiffness and flexibility as definitely altered as a result. Not so much that it makes the board a menace to ride, but enough to notice a a wee bit of extra softness and flex. With that said if you cheat your back foot back an extra 1"or 1 1/2" past the original inserts
you wont notice in that your camber or rocker or effective edge won't really perform any differently. As far a hacking the board in half, Jones boards of magnatraction down the split edge of the board. So basically, if you were too use a jigsaw free hand, and follow your line down the center of the board, then wallah you have magnatraction for touring. You may be anal and love a straight cut and that may drive you nuts, but what I'm saying here is that it's not a perfect science. Do as you want and you will be stoked. It's a sick project and you will dig it and obsess anyway.
