With the forecast of 5mph wind on top and a 13,000 ft freezing level we headed off to Shasta Monday night. We left the car at Bunny Flat TH just after 2am, snow started about 15 minutes from TH and had 4 sections of dirt before continuous. We missed Horse Camp and ended up gaining Casaval Ridge around 9,800 ft, way above where we'd planned.
Still enough snow for fun to be had:
After an icy boot up the W Face we regained the ridge and found our way to the top.
Felt really skechy crossing this upper snowfield. It was already getting hot at 10am and I felt like this slope could move, so we raced across the top one at a time.
Naturally there was a dog chillin on the summit. It felt like a beach up there, could've brought sandals and board shorts.
We dropped the east side of misery hill and then traversed back toward red banks
We ended up on the skiers left side of the red banks and had to find our way through the chutes we hadn't scoped on the way up. Found a way through and then it was wide open for 4,000ft.
Snow had just softened up for what felt like the first time this season. It was a perfectly smooth sheet that must've been ice for sometime and finally melted today.
and of course there were bears
It's probably melting like crazy right now but it should be good for a little while longer.
