Hi, I've been poking around the forum for a while and am considering having a shop here split a board for me- supposedly labor would be 125. I'm in the east coast, where there are plenty of trees and not much open space, so I thought for my first splitboard I would use a promotional Grand Marnier snowboard from my family's liquor store. The thing is, its only around 148cm, and though I'm not tall, 5'8, would that be way to small? Its also not exactly a top of the line board, but thats also appealing to me in case I destroy it on in a tree/stump/rock. Is it worth it paying around 300 bucks for parts and labor on that board, or should I wait and pray for a decently priced used split to pop up?

I'd buy a factory split. The most affordable and lightest that fit you is a 161 Mojo.

IMO 148 is way to small for a split. Even if you are a smaller dude. Somthing like a Prior kyber 156 would fit the bill nice though. If you can't afford a factory split, DIY splits are great, given the right size. Being 5'8", and depending on wieght, I would peg you close to a 158-160. A 148 would be more park style. Take your 148 up to Jay and ride some of the trees out on the far side of The Jet. If you like the 148 up there, SPLIT IT! Beyond that, if you wait for a late season sale on the Mojo, you won't be disappointed. Finally, if you tire of the 148, you can always put your purchased hardware onto a Burton or other board that doesn't come w/ hardware (with a few extra pieces from voile). But you'll need to buy new skins...

IMO if you're riding lots of tight trees like you describe then, yes, it's too big. I'm 5'11'' 175lbs and a 166 is about as big as I can go and still have fun in the trees around here. I'm looking at buying a 168 for more open high-speed runs and expect it to be a bit of a bear to turn in trees.

I ride a 170cm Burton Split and it's pretty big... I'M 5.11 and 180lbs and it's the less versatile of all the boards i have... I don't think it gives enough float... So definately the 148 would be too small... and 165 might be big for you... But still, a 170 isn't too big for our woods up here in the NEK...

Hopefully you'll get your board soon and make your way up North... or you'll post reports of things going on in Stowe/Mansfield!
