Cross and Babycham; double baggin it on Tallac 4/10

Met up with Jim and Larry today and headed up to Tallac. Looking to see about maybe doing either the cross or babycham. Quick hike up with help from a solid skin track put us on top at around 11:30 in the a.m. The cross was looking primed, with good snow and only one track in it. We couldn't really see a good way to get to the entrance of babycham, so decided to run down the cross. Incredible soft and deep motivated us to hike back up from the bottom of the cross chute back up to the babycham entrance. Jim had his verts with him, and was able to break trail through the thigh deep 45-50 degree pow. I struggled behind in boots, barely managing to keep it moving uphill. We reached the knife-edge entrance to babycham at around 2:00pm, and it looked even better than the cross! It was. Killer dry snow and beautiful blue skies made up for tired legs and we dropped in. Jim surely has some more pics on the way, but here are a few from my old camera...

I'd be totally jealous if I didn't have an epic weekend down on the eastside with gimpy, joesnow, and bcd.

Looks super nice!
We were there on Saturday (a bunch of PNW'ers without a clue or a map or a destination in mind) and skied the drainage NE (I think) of the summit. Are the chutes you rode further south on the mountain? We did see some folks ski something refered to as the "hanging snowfield" (with a dog no less).

Great job in bagging those two sweet lines in primo conditions! Babycham looks fat, and it's not even sloughing! You guys hiked up the Cross - wow.......maybe I shouldn't talk after our trip up the coke chute. :shock:

The hanging snowfield is just the normal way back to the car for Buddy (gimpy's dog) after bagging Babycham.

These chutes drop pretty much directly east from the summit if you are looking at a topo, with the cross being a little farther to the south.

Sorry about that Chris! I certainly thought of you, and wondered if we might run in to you on Tallac :-)

We were a large group of 9 down there for a friend's bachelor party, and so I was not the one making decisions about where we went (we did 3 days at resorts, 1 day bc - not my choice of lifts-to-tour ratio ). Plus none of us were on snowboards.
The 4 of us that toured almost ended up at Kirkwood instead, since we had no beta on where to go... I guess I could have hit you up for some info

I'll definitely be back, that area is awesome! And hopefully I'll be splittin' next time...

Well looks like Roman beat me to it again. I'm getting used to this, seeing as how he spanked my and Larry's collective asses getting to the summit... he was there a good 45 minutes ahead of us, on snowshoes. Let's just say it was not a good day for a demonstration of the superior efficiency of the splitboard!

I'll try to get some pics and a TR up tonight. Man, what epic conditions! I bet it was killer on Saturday, but I would have been a little sketched about avy conditions. It was stable on Sunday, but there was actually a good amount of sloughing (can't see much of it in the pics above).

philfort - do yourself a favor and get this book; you won't be disappointed the next time you're in this neck of the woods!

bcr/joesnow/gimpy/bcd - you guys went to Tioga didn't you!! I would be jealous if Tallac hadn't been so epic. Actually I'm jealous anyway.

noice job fellas!!! booting right up the cross eh??? don't think i've ever seen that done. did anyone come skiing down while you guys were booting up??? i'll bet that coulda been interesting :shock:
